Harvey Mason Biography

The American jazz drummer Harvey Mason was born in 1947 in New Jersey. Mason is known for his work and albums as a leader, but equally recognized for his collaborations with some of the era’s most significant jazz and jazz fusion artists, including: George Benson, Johnny Hammond, Herbie Hancock, Lee Ritenour, and Chick Corea, to name a few.

 

Harvey Mason signed with Arista Records and made his solo album debut in 1975 with Marching in the Street. Additional albums with Arista include: Earth Mover (1976), Funk in a Mason Jar (1977), Groovin’ You (1979) and M.V.P. (1981.) Harvey Mason also appeared on George Benson’s album Breezin’ in 1976; the album features a drum solo duet with Ralph MacDonald on the song “On Broadway.” Mason switched to Atlantic Records for the release of Stone Mason in 1982, and throughout the 1990’s he could be heard as a sideman with the band Fourplay, and on other albums by a number of artists, including Herb Alpert, Chet Atkins, and even Beck.

 

Harvey Mason continues to perform and record both as a solo artist and in collaboration with other artists. His most recent album, Chameleon, arrived in 2014, after Mason signed a new recording deal with Concord Records.
