The American trumpet player Nicholas Payton was born in 1973 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Nicholas grew up influenced by the music of his father, bassist Walter Payton. By the time he was nine, Payton was performing alongside his father in the Young Tuxedo Brass Band, and by the time he was a teenager, he was performing on Bourbon Street.
Payton’s first gigs were in the early 1990’s, performing with Marcus Roberts and Elvin Jones on tour. In 1994, after signing his first recording contract as a solo artist, he released his debut album, From This Moment. Between 1994 and 2013, Nicholas Payton continued to release albums regularly, including: Payton’s Place (1998), Sonic Trance (2004), and Bitches (2011), to name a few. He also collaborated with Elvin Jones on his albums Youngblood, Going Home, and It Don’t Mean a Thing, and with Allen Toussaint on his album The Bright Mississippi.
Nicholas Payton is also known for his work with a number of high profile musicians, including: Herbie Hancock, Trey Anastasio, Ray Charles, Stanley Jordon, Clark Terry, Nancy Wilson, and Ray Brown. In recent years, Payton has formed the big band ensemble Television Studio Orchestra and composed a full orchestral work, The Black American Symphony. Most recently, Nicholas Payton formed BMF Records and released his latest album, Sketches of Spain, in 2013.
