Roy Ayers was born in 1940 in Los Angeles, California. Roy’s childhood years were filled with musical influence, growing up in the South Central area of Los Angeles, known as an epicenter for the black music scene of that era. By the late 1960’s, Ayers had found his focus as a vibraphone player and composer, and he’d released his debut album, West Coast Vibes.
The album launched the start of a career which would carry well into the new millennium. Throughout the 1970’s, 1980’s, and 1990’s, Roy Ayers gave audiences a number of works, including the soundtrack to the 1973 film Coffy. The albums Mystic Voyage and Everybody Loves the Sunshine brought Ayers into the disco scene in the mid 1970’s, with the singles “Brother Green (The Disco King)” and “Everybody Loves the Sunshine.” Other hits from this period include “Running Away,” and “Don’t Stop the Feeling.”
The 1990’s saw Roy Ayers contribute to the Red Hot Organization’s album Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool, and by the new millennium, Ayers had begun collaborating with a number of musicians in the house genre, including Kerri Chandler (on the song “Good Vibrations”) and Masters at Work (on the song “Our Time is Coming.”) Most recently, Roy Ayers released the album Perfection in 2006, and began work on an upcoming documentary titled the Roy Ayers Project, set for release in 2014.
