Big Bad Voodoo Daddy formed in California in the late 1980’s after Scotty Morris and Kurt Sodergren came together to establish a swing revival band. Both men had performed in a variety of alternative and punk bands, but sought an opportunity to explore the traditional swing sound of the 1940’s and 1950’s. After self-releasing Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Watchu’ Want for Christmas?, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy garnered the attention of Capital Records and signed with them in the late 1990’s.
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy got its big break when the band appeared in the 1996 film Swingers. Additional album releases followed: Americana Deluxe (1998), This Beautiful Life (1999), Save My Soul (2003), Everything You Want for Christmas (2004), and How Big Can You Get?: The Music of Cab Calloway (2009.) The albums spawned the hit singles “Go Daddy-O,” “Mr. Pinstripe Suit,” and “You & Me & the Bottle Makes 3 Tonight (Baby.)”
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has continued to perform and record with the current lineup of members: Scotty Morris, Kurt Sodergren, Dirk Shumaker, Andy Rowley, Glen Marhevka, Karl Hunter, and Joshua Levy. In the new millennium, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has played a number of performances with a variety of philharmonic and symphony orchestras, and they have also provided music for the movie The Wild, Disney’s Phineas and Ferb, and the opening theme for the television series 3rd Rock from the Sun. Most recently, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy released Rattle Them Bones, in 2012.
