Ron Carter was born in 1937 in Ferndale, Michigan. Carter started his musical lessons on the cello when he was still in elementary school, but switched to bass as a teenager. While in high school, Ron frequently performed, even playing with the Philharmonic Orchestra in New York, and after receiving his masters degree in music performance from the Manhattan School of Music, he began working alongside such notable musicians as Chico Hamilton, Jaki Byard, and Don Ellis.
In the 1960’s, Ron Carter began performing with the Miles Davis Quintet alongside Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams. Carter remained with the group until 1968, after which time he launched a career which would span well into the new millennium and bring Carter into collaboration with some of the music industry’s most highly respected performers. Ron Carter’s music appears on a number of albums, including The Low End Theory (from A Tribe Called Quest) and Stolen Moments: Red, Hot + Cool (from Red Hot Organization, to benefit AIDS awareness and research.) He also currently serves as Professor Emeritus at the City College of New York, and has taught bass at the Julliard School in New York. A member of the Advisory Committee for the Jazz Foundation of America, Ron Carter also recently served as a judge for the Annual Essentially Ellington competition in 2013.
He published his biography, Ron Carter: Finding the Right Notes, in 2008. Audiences have also recently seen him in the hit HBO series, Treme. Carter continues to teach, perform, and record.
