Melle Mel Biography
The American hip-hop and rap artist known as Melle Mel was born Melvin Glover in 1961. Melle Mel rose to prominence as one of the primary songwriters for Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and is recognized today as one of the pioneers of early rap and hip-hop music.
Before he became one of the first rappers to adopt a moniker beginning with “MC,” Melle Mel recorded a number of hits with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, including “Freedom,” “The Birthday Party,” “King of the Streets,” “Vice,” and the iconic “White Lines (Don’t Don’t Do It.)” Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, Melle Mel’s work appeared on some of the era’s most significant rap and early hip-hop music, until in 2007 Mel released his very first “debut” solo album.
Muscles arrived in January of that year and has marked a turning point for the artist. Although already a firmly established artist, and among the first to bring hip-hop and rap into the mainstream, it appears that Melle Mel now has future plans for additional solo work and possible performances as a solo artist.
