Sir Mix a-Lot Biography
Sir Mix-a-Lot was born Anthony Ray in 1963 and founded the Nastymix label in the late 1980’s. By 1987, Mix-a-Lot had released his first hit, “Posse on Broadway,” and within a year of its release came his debut album, Swass. The album went on to see platinum status and spawned a number of hits for the artist, many of which have now become iconic in the history of rap music.
Following his initial success, Sir Mix-a-Lot signed to the Def American label in the early 1990’s. Shortly thereafter, his pinnacle achievement, the single “Baby Got Back,” went multi-platinum and earned the artist his first Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance in 1993. His albums following his debut include: Seminar (1989), Mack Daddy (1992, on which “Baby Got Back” appears), Chief Boot Knocka (1994), Return of the Bumpasaurus (1996), and Daddy’s Home (2003.)
In addition to his work in music, Sir Mix-a-Lot has also worked in film and television, appearing in the series The Watcher and narrating the documentary Wheedle’s Groove.
