Lily Allen first launched onto the scene in 2006 with her first number one hit in the UK, “Smile.” The edgy “LDN” followed, and then Alright, Still solidified Lily Allen as one the country’s most engaging, compelling, and talented imports. But long before her rise to fame, Lily Allen was born in 1985 in Hammersmith, London. As the daughter of actor Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen, Lily grew up in the entertainment industry to be both influenced and educated by the environment.
So when Allen began knocking on the doors of record companies at the age of sixteen, she was no dilettante; she knew exactly what she was in for. Initially, Lily’s first deal in 2002 pushed her to a sound that was a poor fit for her, but two years later, Lily Allen took control and began carving her own path. She posted demos on her own MySpace page and performed at various Notting Hill nightclubs in 2006. “Smile” brought her the attention she needed, prompting Mark Ronson, producer, to bring her to New York. Together, they created “The Littlest Things” and crafted plans for her debut album. Alright, Still eventually broke into the Top Twenty and sold over 2.5 million records.
It’s Not Me, It’s You came next, with a variety of aggressive singles, including “22,” “Fuck You,” “The Fear,” “Everyone’s At It,” “Not Fair,” and “Him.” Since that time, Lily Allen has continued to perform and publish controversial and provocative works, lately under her own record label, which she launched in 2011. Most recently, Allen released the album Sheezus (2014), which reached into the top ten in the United States and rose all the way to the number one spot on the UK charts.
