Jazmine Sullivan Biography

The recording artist Jazmine Sullivan was born in 1987 in Philadephia, Pennsylvania. Jazmine grew up in a household filled with music; her  mother had been a studio backup singer and encouraged young Jazmine to pursue singing as a career. While still attending the Philadephia high school For the creative and performing arts, Sullivan signed with Jive Records but it would still be another few years before her career would take off.

Initially, Jazmine Sullivan provided background or guest vocals to work for a number of other artists, and she also began to write. Before her breakthrough, Jazmine penned hits for such notable performers as Monica and Jennifer Hudson, until she released her own debut, “Need U Bad,” in 2008, after signing with J Records. The song was a massive hit, rising to the number one spot on the R&B and hip hop charts, and rising into the top forty on the mainstream charts. Sullivan’s debut album, Fearless, followed, also rising to the number one spot on the R&B charts and to the number six spot on the mainstream charts.

Since that time, Jazmine Sullivan has been on a steady rise, with the release of her sophomore effort, Love Me Back, performing as well as her debut. Between the two albums, Sullivan has given audiences the top ten R&B hits: “Bust Your Windows”; “Lions, Tigers, and Bears”; and “Holding You Down (Goin’ in Circles),” and the top forty hit “10 Seconds.” Her music has earned Jazmine Sullivan multiple awards, including a BET Centric Award (2009) and an ASCAP Award (for “Holding You Down (Goin’ in Circles.” Sullivan has also been nominated for a staggering eleven Grammy Awards, in the categories for: Best New Artist, Best Female $&B Vocal performance, Best R&B Song, Best R&B Contemporary Album, and Best Female $&B Vocal Performance.

Jazmine Sullivan recently released her latest album, Reality Show, featuring the song “Dumb,” in 2014.
