Karyn White Biography

The R&B singer Karyn White was born in 1965 in Los Angeles. Young Karyn began her love of music while singing in the church choir, which led to her earliest gigs as a backup singer. White’s talents eventually caught the attention of Warner Bros. Records, to which she signed as a solo artist before releasing her debut album, Karyn White, in 1988.

The album featured the production talents of Babyface and L.A. Reid, so it was no surprise when the album spawned the top ten R&B hits “Secret Rendezvous,” “The Way You Love Me,” “Superwoman,” and “Love Saw It.” The album earned Karyn White two Grammy nominations and the distinction of becoming the first female R&B artist to have her first three singles rise to the number one spot on the charts.

Karyn White followed up her self-titled debut with the albums Ritual of Love (1991) and Make Him Do Right (1994.) Both albums reached into the top twenty on the R&B charts and collectively spawned the additional top forty hits: “Slow Down,” “Romantic,” “The Way I Feel About You,” “Walkin’ the Dog,” “Do Unto Me,” “Hungah,” “Can I Stay with You,” and “I’d Rather Be Alone.” White’s albums and singles earned her two American Music Award nominations (for Favorite Soul/R&B New Artist and Favorite Soul/R&B Album); three Soul Train Music Award nominations (for Best New Artist, Best R&B/Urban Artist, and R&B/Urban Contemporary Album); and two Grammy nominations (for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, in 1989 and 1990, for “The Way You Love Me” and  “Superwoman.”)

In the late 1990’s, Karyn White took a break from the music industry to start up a successful California-based real estate and interior design business. But recently, in 2012, she returned with the comeback album, Carpe Diem. White now has plans for additional performances and projects in the coming years.
