Mario Biography

The R&B singer and actor known as Mario was born Mario Dewar Barrett in 1986 in Baltimore, Maryland. Young Mario grew up raised by his grandmother, harboring dreams of becoming a singer when he was as young as the age of four. Although his mother struggled with addiction, she was highly supportive of his aspirations and managed to purchase him a karaoke machine on which to practice his vocals.

 

By the time he was a teenager, Mario had joined his first musical group. Under the guidance of inspirational music teachers and with the support of his community, Mario honed his talents and garnered his first record deal when he was only fourteen years old. Mario’s self-titled debut arrived in 2001, featuring a cover of Biz Markie’s hit “Just a Friend.” The reboot of the classic hit rose to the number one spot on the charts, paving the way for the additional hits “C’mon” and “Braid My Hair.”

 

Desiring to break away from the “teen sensation” label struck with the success of his first album, Mario sought counsel from some of the industry’s best-known producers before moving on to his sophomore effort. The result was the album Turning Point, which surpassed the success of Mario’s debut and spawned the hit “Let Me Love You.” Since that time, Mario has released the additional albums Go (2007) and D.N.A. (2009), featuring the hit singles “How Do I Breathe,” “Crying Out for Me,” “Music for Love,” “Break Up,” and “Somebody Else.” Mario has also appeared as a featured artist on a number of other singles, including “Headboard” (with Plies and Hurricane Chris); and “Ms. Chocolate” (featuring R. Kelly and Lil Jon.)

 

In addition to his career as a musician, Mario has also appeared in the films Step Up (2006) and Freedom Writers (2007), and on the television shows: Sabrina, the Teenage Witch; On on One; and Love That Girl! He also competed on the show Dancing with the Stars in 2008. Mario’s personal foundation, The Mario Do Right Foundation, was established in 2008 to assist children who suffer from circumstances similar to the ones in which Mario himself was raised, with a parent suffering from addiction.

 

Mario’s career is at present going strong. He recently announced the release of his next album, Evolve, expected to arrive in 2014.
