Masego Biography

Masego, born Micah Davis on June 8, 1993, is a Jamaican-born musician and singer-songwriter known for his unique blend of R&B, jazz, and electronic music. He grew up in a military family that moved around the country, and he learned to play the drums and piano without formal lessons as a child. Masego's parents were both pastors, and he was raised in a non-denominational Christian home.

Masego's musical journey began in his youth, and he adopted the stage name "Masego" in high school, which means "blessing" in Tswana. He released his debut EP, The Pink Polo EP with Medasin, in 2015, followed by Loose Thoughts in 2016. His breakthrough came in 2017 with the collaborative track "Tadow" with FKJ, which was fully improvised after their first meeting.

In 2018, Masego released his debut album Lady Lady, which featured guest appearances from FKJ, SiR, Tiffany Gouché, and De'Wayne Jackson. The album spawned the hit single "Tadow" and received critical acclaim. In 2020, he released his EP Studying Abroad: Extended Stay, which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album. His self-titled album was released in 2023.

Masego's music style is often referred to as "TrapHouseJazz," a genre that blends elements of trap music, jazz, and R&B. His influences include Lukky (DJ PLM), John P. Kee, Andre 3000, and Cab Calloway, among others. He has cited his upbringing in a musical household and his exposure to various genres as key factors in shaping his unique sound.

As a performer, Masego is known for his high-energy live shows, which often feature him playing the saxophone alongside electronic beats and vocals. He has toured extensively and has performed at festivals such as Coachella and Governors Ball.
