Kandi Burrus Biography

“Real housewife” Kandi Burress was born in 1976 in College Park, Georgia. But long before Burress became known to audiences for her role on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, she was a singer-songwriter performing with the group Xscape and penning such notable hits as the TLC hit “No Scrubs.” In 2000, Kandi even became the first African-American woman to win the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award.

Even since joining the cast of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta in 2009, Kandi has continued to write and perform as a musician. She released her debut EP, Fly Above EP, in late 2009 and signed her first major label deal with Aslyum Records shortly thereafter. Her major label debut, Kandi Koated, arrived in 2010 and features the singles: “Fly Above,” “Leave U,” and “Me & U.” Kandi’s vocals are also featured on the hit singles “U and Dat” (with T-Pain); “4,5,6” (with JT Money); and “Try it Out” (with Big Bank Black.)

In addition to her music career and her appearance on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Kandi Burruss has also appeared in small roles on the shows Let’s Stay Together, Single Ladies, The Tankards, and her own spin-off specials: The Kandi Factory, Kandi’s Wedding, and Kandi’s Ski Trip.
