OMI Biography
The Jamaica American singer known as OMI was born Omar Samuel Pasley in 1986 in Clarendon. Pasley spent most of his formative years in Jamaica, except for a brief few years as a teenager when he lived with an aunt in New York. Once he returned to Jamaica, OMI began to write and record his own music. One of his tracks, “Cheerleader,” was written in 2008 and released in 2012; although the song didn’t garner much attention at the time, it would end up serving as OMI’s big breakthrough.
In 2014, the president of Ultra Music, Patrick Moxey, discovered the song “Cheerleader” and offered to have the song remixed for re-release as a dance track. The song rose into the top of the dance charts internationally, garnering significant attention for OMI and earning the artist multiple awards and nominations, including: Teen Choice Award (for Choice Summer Song); an MTV Video Music Award (for Song of Summer); and a BBC Music Award (for Song of the Year.)
Since the success of “Cheerleader,” OMI has released his debut album, Me 4 U, which arrived in 2015. The album rose into the top forty internationally and spawned the additional top ten single “Hula Hoop.”
