The artist known as Citizen Cope was born Clarence Greenwood in Memphis Tennessee but spent his formative years in Washington, D.C. Greenwood’s earliest gigs were as the DJ for a hip-hop group called Basehead, but in 2002 he launched a solo career, signing with DreamWorks and changing his stage name to Citizen Cope.
Citizen Cope released a self-titled debut album, which – although critically acclaimed – was not commercially successful. His next two endeavors – The Clarence Greenwood Recordings (2004) and Every Waking Moment (2006) – fared slightly better, but it was his 2010 release - The Rainwater LP – which rose into the top ten on the United States Independent Albums charts.
The Rainwater LP was entirely self-produced, as Citizen Cope had previously dissolved all relationships with the major record labels. Rainwater brought Citizen Cope a new fan – Ellen Degeneres – and she invited him to perform the song “Healing Hands” on her show in the spring of 2010. Since that time, Citizen Cope’s star has been on the rise; even earlier singles from his previous albums, such as “Let the Drummer Kick” (from 2002’s Citizen Cope), have found their way onto the mainstream charts, and Citizen Cope’s most recent release, One Lovely Day, rose into the top forty on the mainstream charts upon its release in 2012.
Citizen Cope’s music has found its way onto the big screen in a number of films. “One Lovely Day” was featured in the 2012 film Battleship, and on the small screen, his song “Bullet and Target” has been featured on the shows Cold Case and. Additional music from Citizen Cope has been featured in the films Trust the Man, Accepted, Fracture, and The Lincoln Lawyer, and on the television shows Smallville, One Tree Hill, Scrubs, and Entourage.
