The Irish alternative rock band the Cranberries were established in 1990 in Limerick, by founding members Fergal Lawler, Mike Hogan, Noel Hogan, and Dolores O’Riordan. Brothers Noel and Mike had been performing together in a variety of other projects, eventually establishing the band, the Cranberry Saw Us. After the departure of their singer and drummer, the duo regrouped and teamed up with O’Riordan and Lawler to form the Cranberries.
A demo tape featuring the future smash hit “Linger” began to circulate, eventually garnering the attention of record labels across the global, sparking a bidding war. The Cranberries settled on a deal with Island Records and entered the studio to record “Dreams,” which would become their debut single prior to the release of their debut album, Everybody Else is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? The album arrived in 1993, initially to little fanfare, despite the release of the additional song “Linger.” But the MTV network saw potential in the group, and after adding the videos for “Linger” and “Dreams” to their regular rotation, enthusiasm for the Cranberries started to build.
Upon the re-issue of “Linger,” the song shot into the top twenty on the UK charts, bringing “Dreams” along with it. Eventually, Everybody Else is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? Rose to the number one spot on the UK charts and set the stage for a number six rise on the United States charts, eventually reaching triple platinum status within its first year. In the next decade, the Cranberries released the additional albums: No Need to Argue (1994), To the Faithful Departed (1996), Buy the Hatchet (1999), and Wake Up and Smell the Coffee (2001.) The albums spawned the additional hits “Zombie,” “Ode to my Family,” “Ridiculous Thoughts,” “I Can’t Be with You,” “Salvation,” “Free to Decide,” “When You’re Gone,” “Analyse,” and “Promises.”
Following their 2001 album, the Cranberries disbanded, only to reunite in 2009 for a live performance. The success of the event led to their return to the studio to record Roses, which was released in 2012. Currently, the Cranberries continue to perform and record together, with plans for additional projects in the future.
