Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real Biography

The American country rock group known as Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real (also known as POTR) was established in the late 2000’s by founding members Anthony LoGerfo and Lukas Autry Nelson. That Nelson would grow up to become a musician is no surprise; his father is legendary country music singer Willie Nelson. While living in Los Angeles, Nelson met up with LoGerfo, and the two musicians began writing and playing music together.

Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real released their debut, the EP Live Beginnings, in 2008. Extensive touring and performing throughout 2009 followed, after which time the group returned to Austin, Texas, to record a full-length album at Pedernales Studios. The result, Promise of the Real, arrived in late 2010 and was a hit. With musical influences that nod to Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix, and Willie Nelson, the album launched an extensive tour which brought Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real to festivals and venues throughout the nation for much of 2011.

Since their rise to prominence, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real has released the additional albums: Wasted (2012), Something Real (2016), and Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real (2017), which has become the band’s first top ten breakthrough on the mainstream charts in the United States. The band has also collaborated extensively with Neil Young, performing for his albums The Monsanto Years (2015) and The Visitor (2017), and currently serves as his regular backing band.

Most recently, Lukas Nelson co-produced most of the music for the hit film, A Star is Born, and Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real appears in the film as Jackson Maine’s (Bradley Cooper’s) band. Nelson also co-wrote many of the songs alongside Lady Gaga, bringing a sense of authenticity to the film’s musical style.
