Pantera Biography

Pantera, hailing from Arlington, Texas, emerged as a formidable force in the American heavy metal scene, leaving an indelible mark on the genre's history. Founded in 1981, the band's early lineup saw vocalist Phil Anselmo, bassist Rex Brown, and the iconic Abbott brothers, Vinnie Paul on drums and Dimebag Darrell on guitar. Over the years, Pantera's lineup evolved, with touring musicians Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante joining the ranks, maintaining the band's enduring legacy.

While Pantera is best known for its groove metal innovation, it played a pivotal role in the second wave of thrash metal alongside notable acts like Testament, Sepultura, and Machine Head during the late 1980s and early 1990s. With approximately 20 million records sold worldwide and four Grammy nominations under their belt, Pantera stands as one of the most influential and successful bands in heavy metal history.

Pantera's journey began in the glam metal scene, and they released three albums in the mid-1980s with lead vocalist Terry Glaze, which garnered limited success. Seeking a heavier sound, the band recruited Phil Anselmo in 1986, marking a turning point. Their 1988 release, "Power Metal," set the stage for their breakthrough, and a deal with major label Atco in 1989 paved the way for their official debut album, "Cowboys from Hell" in 1990. This album not only popularized groove metal but also elevated their status in the metal world. The follow-up, "Vulgar Display of Power" (1992), further solidified their place with its heavier sound and increased popularity. "Far Beyond Driven" (1994) even debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.

However, tensions arose within the band when Anselmo battled heroin addiction in 1995, culminating in a near-fatal overdose in 1996. These struggles led to separate recording sessions for "The Great Southern Trendkill" (1996). The internal strife persisted for seven years, resulting in only one more studio album, "Reinventing the Steel" (2000). In 2001, Pantera went on hiatus, ultimately leading to the band's dissolution in 2003.

Following the band's breakup, the Abbott brothers formed Damageplan, while Anselmo engaged in various side projects, including Down, which also featured Rex Brown. Tragedy struck on December 8, 2004, when Dimebag Darrell was tragically shot and killed on stage by a disturbed fan during a Damageplan concert in Columbus, Ohio. Vinnie Paul later formed Hellyeah, but sadly, he passed away in 2018, leaving Brown and Anselmo as the surviving members of the band's most iconic lineup.

In a remarkable turn of events, it was announced in July 2022 that Rex Brown and Phil Anselmo would reunite in 2023 for Pantera's first tour in 22 years. To honor the Abbott brothers' legacy, Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante stepped in to handle guitar and drums, respectively. The revitalized lineup made its triumphant return, performing its first show in 21 years at the Hell and Heaven festival in Mexico on December 2, 2022. Pantera's enduring influence and powerful music continue to resonate with fans worldwide.
