Poison Biography
Poison, the iconic American glam metal band, emerged in 1983 in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. The group's classic lineup comprised lead singer and rhythm guitarist
Bret Michaels, drummer Rikki Rockett, lead guitarist and backing vocalist C.C. DeVille, and bassist Bobby Dall. Their meteoric rise to fame occurred during the mid-1980s to mid-1990s, amassing staggering record sales of 18 million in the US and over 55 million worldwide.
Known for chart-toppers like "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," Poison unleashed a string of hit singles throughout the '80s and '90s, including "Talk Dirty to Me," "I Won't Forget You," and "Nothin' But a Good Time." Their debut album, "Look What the Cat Dragged In," went multi-platinum in 1986, followed by "Open Up and Say... Ahh!" which reached 5x platinum status. "Flesh & Blood" continued their platinum streak, and even as the glam metal era waned with the rise of grunge, their album "Native Tongue" still achieved Gold status. In 1996, "Poison's Greatest Hits: 1986–1996" went double platinum.
The original lineup reunited for a successful greatest hits tour in 1999. In the early 2000s, they released albums like "Crack a Smile... and More!" and "Hollyweird." The band's 20th-anniversary celebration in 2006 with "The Best of Poison: 20 Years of Rock" marked their return to the Billboard top 20 charts. Individual members pursued solo careers and ventured into reality TV.
Throughout their journey, Poison delivered seven studio albums, four live albums, five compilation albums, and 28 radio singles. In 2012, VH1 ranked them as the top hair band of the '80s.
Their origin story saw them morph from a local Pennsylvania act named Paris into Poison, gaining fame in the Hollywood Sunset Strip club scene. The pivotal addition of C.C. DeVille as their guitarist came after much deliberation and auditions, leading to the creation of their iconic hit "Talk Dirty to Me."
The '80s and '90s were their heyday, fueled by albums like "Look What the Cat Dragged In" and "Open Up and Say... Ahh!" However, internal conflicts, legal battles, and lineup changes haunted them, leading to DeVille's exit and subsequent replacement by Richie Kotzen. Kotzen's tenure introduced "Native Tongue" and a shift towards blues-rock.
Despite their ups and downs, Poison continued to tour and release music. Their albums "Power to the People" and "Hollyweird" kept the band in the spotlight. The mid-2000s brought about a resurgence, with "The Best Of Poison" compilation album and a successful reunion tour with the original members.
As the 2010s rolled in, Poison members explored solo endeavors, with Michaels releasing several albums and dabbling in acting alongside Charlie Sheen. DeVille rejoined the band in 1996, paving the way for the Greatest Hits reunion tour in 1999 and the release of "Crack a Smile... and More!" in 2000.
The 2000s also featured albums like "Hollyweird," but the band experienced a polarized reception due to their evolving sound. They continued to tour, solidifying their status as rock legends.
In the late 2000s and early 2010s, Poison ventured into covers with "Poison'd!" and embarked on tours with bands like Mötley Crüe and
Def Leppard. Health setbacks, including
Bret Michaels' life-threatening health scare in 2010, didn't deter the band.
Their legacy persisted with live albums and Michaels' solo releases. In 2019, he announced an autobiography and a new single, further cementing Poison's place in rock history. The band then embarked on "The Stadium Tour" with Mötley Crüe and
Def Leppard in 2022, marking another chapter in their enduring career. Despite uncertainties about new albums, Poison's anthems continue to resonate with fans, leaving an indelible mark on rock 'n' roll history.
