Emily King is an American singer-songwriter born on July 10, 1985, in New York City. Growing up on the Lower East Side, King was exposed to the music industry from a young age. Her parents, Marion Cowings and Kim Kalesti, were a singing duo who traveled regularly and took King and her older brother with them. This early exposure sparked King's passion for music, and at the age of 16, she left high school to pursue her music career.
King's early career began with a record deal with J Records in 2004, where she appeared on Nas' album Street's Disciple. Her debut album, East Side Story, was released in 2007 and received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album of the Year. After leaving J Records in 2008, King continued to work independently with producer Jeremy Most, self-recording her follow-up EP Seven in her home.
Throughout her career, King has toured extensively with various artists, including Nas, John Legend, Floetry, Alicia Keys, Chaka Khan, Erykah Badu, and Maroon 5. Her unique voice and songwriting skills have earned her recognition and awards. In 2012, she was awarded the Holly Prize from The Songwriters Hall of Fame for her all-in songwriter style, reminiscent of Buddy Holly's music. King has also collaborated with other artists, including José James on his album No Beginning No End.
In 2015, King released her second studio album, The Switch, which showcased her distinctive voice and songwriting skills. She then signed with independent label ATO Records in 2017 and released her third studio album, Scenery, in 2019. The album received critical acclaim and earned King two Grammy nominations: Best R&B Song for "Being Human" (the ending theme song for the Cartoon Network animated series Steven Universe Future) and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.
In 2020, King released her fourth studio album, Sides, which features acoustic takes on her previous songs and includes a guest appearance by Sara Bareilles. The album received positive reviews and led to a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance for her song "See Me". King's music has been featured in various TV shows and films, including the Cartoon Network animated series Steven Universe Future.
Throughout her career, Emily King has demonstrated her versatility as a singer-songwriter and musician. Her unique voice and songwriting skills have earned her critical acclaim and numerous awards. With four studio albums and numerous collaborations with other artists, King continues to make a name for herself in the music industry.
