American internet celebrity and actor Ryan Higa was born in 1990 in Hawaii. As a child growing up in Hilo, Higa was interested in judo and participated in wrestling while in high school. While still in high school, Ryan and his friend Sean Fujiyoshi began posting YouTube videos of themselves lip syncing. Although initially the endeavor was strictly for personal entertainment, the two young men were surprised to see a quickly growing following on the network.
In 2006, Ryan and Sean teamed up with friends Enos and Nago to form “The Yabo Crew” and founded the nigahiga YouTube channel. Within five years, the channel had reached three million subscribers. In 2011, Ryan created another channel, HigaTV, which posts behind the scenes videos and various vlogs. Today, Ryan Higa’s channels have collectively clocked more than three billion views and a total of nearly twenty million subscribers.
In 2008, Ryan and Sean embarked on their foray into feature film, appearing on the big screen in the indie limited release Ryan and Sean’s Not So Excellent Adventure. The film screened in California and Hawaii and then released to DVD one year later. The independent short, Agents of Secret Stuff, followed in 2010, appearing on the nigahiga channel.
Most recently, Ryan Higa founded RHPC - the Ryan Higa Production Company. The company will serve as producer for the nigahiga channel content and eventually branch out to productions outside of the online digital realm. Higa most recently also made his big screen debut in a major studio feature – he appears in the role of Scratch in the 2016 film, Tell Me How I Die.
