American journalist and anchorwoman Connie Chung was born in Washington, D.C. Chung’s parents immigrated to the United States less than a year before her birth, and Connie grew up in the D.C. area, attending Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. After graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park with a degree in journalism in the late 1960’s, she began work as a correspondent for the CBS Evening News during the Watergate scandal. Her coverage during that time was a breakthrough for her and launched her career.
From CBS, Chung moved to NBC to anchor the network’s NBC News at Sunrise, which led to co-hosting the NBC Nightly News after Tom Brokaw left the program. By the early 1990’s, Connie was anchoring her own news broadcast, Saturday Night with Connie Chung, and then finally landed a co-hosting job for 20/20 with Charlie Gibson. The role on 20/20 would become the role with which she is still most frequently associated today.
Some of Connie Chung’s most famous interview subjects include Magic Johnson (whom she interviewed after he went public with his HIV-positive status in the early 1990’s, his first such interview); Gary Condit (whom she interviewed after the Chandra Levy disappearance); and an interview with Newt Gingrich’s mother in which Chung’s rapid-fire questions resulted in some rather blunt admissions regarding her thoughts on Hillary Clinton.
Today, Connie Chung still appears as a commentator for a number of news networks. She most recently appeared on MSNBC to share her thoughts with Steve Kornacki regarding the Trump vs. Clinton presidential campaign.
