The actor Mario Lopez was born in 1973 in San Diego, California. Early in his career, and while still a child, Lopez appeared in a number of television projects in supporting roles, including a.k.a. Pablo, Kids Incorporated, and the Golden Girls. But Mario’s biggest breakthrough came in 1989, when he earned the coveted role of A.C. Slater on Saved by the Bell, launching him to teenage stardom and setting the stage for a career which has lasted well into the new millennium.
As A.C. Slater, Mario Lopez appeared on the show for its entire five year run, and returned for appearances in the spinoffs and movies, Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style (1992), Saved by the Bell: The College Years (1993), Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas (1994), and Saved by the Bell: The New Class (1995.) But by the late 1990’s, Lopez was seeking opportunities to branch out beyond the typecast character of A.C. Slater, and so in 1997, he accepted the breakthrough role of Greg Louganis in Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story.
Mario’s acclaimed performance has led to a number of other roles since, including: Dave Ruggles in Killing Mr. Griffin (1997), Lehman in A Crack in the Floor (2000), David Morales in Outta Time (2002), Dr. Mike Hamoui on the series Nip/Tuck (2006-2010), and Marco in the film Husband for Hire (2008.) In recent years, Mario Lopez has also accepted a number of roles hosting various reality shows, including The X Factor and Animal Planet’s Pet Star. He also made his stage debut on Broadway in A Chorus Line in 2008.
Most recently, Mario Lopez published his third fitness-focused book, Extra Lean Family, in 2012. A fitness enthusiast, he has written other books on the subject and serves as a spokesperson for healthy living.
