Ed Schultz Biography

The American political commentator and television personality Ed Schultz was born in 1954 in Norfolk, Virginia. After graduating high school in 1972, Schultz enrolled in Minnesota State University Moorhead on a football scholarship. After a successful college football career, Ed signed with the Oakland Raiders, but by the 1980’s his career in football had concluded and he began a career in sports casting.

Schultz’s first gigs were for two local stations in Fargo, North Dakota, doing radio play-by-play and anchoring the nightly sports broadcasts. But today Ed Schultz is best known for his work on such television programs as The Ed Show on MSNBC and his television nightly news program, News with Ed Schultz. Although Ed Schultz’s original political leanings were towards the conservative, after his experiences struggling to obtain proper medical care for his mother – who was suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease – shifted his political alignments to the left. Since 2000, Schultz has been a vocal self-proclaimed “liberal Democrat.”

Ed Schultz is the author of two books on politics and money – Straight Talk from the Heartland: Tough Talk, Common Sense, and Hope from a Former Conservative (2004); and Killer Politics: How Big Money and Bad Politics are Destroying the Great American Middle Class (2010.) Today, Ed can still be heard on his nationally syndicated podcast, Ed Schultz News and Commentary.
