Andrew Johns Biography

The Australian rugby player Andrew Johns was born in 1974 in Cessnock, New South Wales. Hailed as one of the era’s greatest rugby players of all time, Johns career began in the early 1990’s with the Newcastle Knight, serving as the team’s captain.

 

Due to a number of injuries, Andrew Johns opted to retire from the sport at the age of thirty-two, in 2007. Shortly after his retirement, the Rugby League Week named him the greatest player of the sport for the last thirty years, and the East grandstand of the EnergyAustralia Stadium was re-named Andrew Johns Stand.

 

Andrew Johns’ career highlights include two World Cup tournaments and an number of international records, including most points scored in a test match (against Fiji in 1996) and most points scored on an international debut (thirty, during the 1995 World Cup against South Africa.) Johns is also the recipient of a number of awards, including: the Golden Boot (1999 and 2001), the Dally M Medal (1998, 1999, and 2002), and the Clive Churchill Medal (2001.)

 

Andrew Johns was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2012. He continues to make public appearances in his retirement, and he is today still considered to be one of the greatest players of the game.
