Cal Ripkin Jr Biography
The American baseball player Cal Ripken Jr. was born in 1960 in Maryland. Ripken’s father was a coach for the Baltimore Orioles, and so it was no surprise that Cal Jr. developed a love of baseball and eventually began to pursue a career in the sport. The advantage of being surrounded by professionals further helped to bolster his natural talents, and by high school he was among the most valuable players on his school’s team.
After high school, Ripken was drafted by the Orioles in 1978, and by 1981 he’d reached the major leagues as a shortstop. Since then, Cal Jr. has been among America’s most celebrated baseball players, earning awards for Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, and Gold Glove Awards, and earning the All-Star title nineteen times. In 1983, Cal Ripken Jr. saw his team to the World Series championship, and by the end of his his career he had broken Lou Gehrig’s record for most consecutive games played.
Today, Cal Ripken Jr. is regarding as one of America’s best shortstops. Since his retirement from baseball, Ripken has been active in a number of business ventures, including ownership of a number of minor league teams. In 2007, Cal Jr. began a run on TBS Sports as a studio analyst, a role which he continues to frequently fill today, and he serves on the Board of Directors for ZeniMax Media.
