Charles Barkley Biography

American basketball legend Charles Barkley was born in 1963 in Leeds, Alabama, near the city of Birmingham. Barkley earned a starting position on his high school team in his senior year, and his performance on the court garnered the attention of Auburn University’s head coach. After accepting a scholarship to play for Auburn, Barkley spent his college years entertaining and exciting fans with his antics on the court, all the while earning multiple awards for his performance.

Charles Barkley was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1984 NBA Draft, remaining with the team until he was traded to the Phoenix Suns in the early 1990’s. Barkley completed his career with the NBA with the Houston Rockets, retiring in 2000 from his sixteen year career. Over the course of this time, Barkley earned a position on the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players in NBA History list, and an induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Barkley also went on to compete in the Olympics in 1992 and 1996, winning two gold medals for the US “Dream Team.”

Since retiring from the game, Charles Barkley has worked as an NBA analyst, mainly for Turner Network Television. Barkley has also authored a number of books and expressed an interest in politics, even entertaining the possibility of running for office at some point in the future.
