Nat Young Biography

The Australian surfer Robert “Nat” Young was born in 1947 in Sydney, New South Wales. Young grew up learning to surf while still in elementary school, earning his first championship in 1966. In the late 1960’s, Nat Young won the Bells Beach Surf Classic four times, breaking records at the time. He also won Australian titles three times between 1966 and 1969.

 

Young rose to prominence not only through his talents as a surfer, but through his appearances in a number of surfing films in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Most notably, his appearance in the 1973 film Crystal Voyager made him one of the sport’s most recognizable figures, leading to a number of small roles and appearances in other films, including Australia’s Palm Beach (1979.)

 

Since retiring, Nat Young has written a number of books on the sport of surfing and has become known as an iconic author and expert on the sport. Notable works from Young include: Nat Young’s Book of Surfing: The Fundamentals and Adventure of Board-riding (1979); The History of Surfing (1983); Surfing & Sailboard Guide to Australia (1986); and Nat’s Nat, and That’s That: An Autobiography (1998.)

 

Nat Young continues to write and speak on the sport of surfing. He also supports his son, who is a rising star in the sport. Young’s most recent books, The Complete History of Surfing: From Water to Snow, was published in 2008.
