Sugar Ray Leonard Biography

American boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard was born in 1956 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Leonard’s mother named her son after Ray Charles, although the nickname “Sugar” was given to him early on in his boxing career and stuck. Leonard grew up in Palmer Park, Maryland, where he was a shy and responsible student. His older brother, Roger, introduced Sugar Ray to the sport of boxing when Ray was thirteen, and it quickly became clear that Ray had a talent for the sport.

By 1976, Sugar Ray Leonard had qualified as the light welterweight for the United States Olympic Team. Today, the team as assembled in that year is considered one of the greatest teams in the history of Olympic boxing, and Leonard impressed everyone by winning his first four bouts. Sugar Ray quickly became an American favorite, and an iconic figure for the sport of boxing. When he turned professional in 1977, his debut drew a crowd over ten thousand deep to the Civic Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Two years later, Leonard won his first World Welterweight Championship at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, in a fight against Wilfred Benitez. The rest, as they say, is history.

Sugar Ray Leonard’s career boasts more than one hundred million in purses, the title of ‘Boxer of the Decade” for the 1980’s, and multiple world titles in five different weight divisions. Notable titles for Sugar Ray include: two WBA championships in the little middleweight and welterweight divisions; four WBC championships in the welterweight, middleweight, super middleweight, and light heavyweight divisions; an NABF welterweight championship; and the title “Fighter of the Year” for 1979.

Sugar Ray Leonard retired from the sport in 1998, and then began his career as a motivation speaker, television personality, actor, and boxing analyst. As an analyst, Leonard has worked for nearly all the major news networks, including ESPN and HBO, and he has lent his likeness to endorsements for major companies such as 7 Up, Coca-Cola, Nabisco, and Ford. As an actor, Sugar Ray Leonard has appeared in the films I Spy and most recently, The Fighter, alongside Christian Bale.
