Metro Boomin is an American producer and record executive born Leland Tyler Wayne in 1993. He was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, but would frequently drive down to Atlanta, Georgia, to collaborate with artists. He attempted learning bass guitar in middle school, but quickly switched to digital production when he downloaded Fruity Loops at age 13. He later moved to Morehouse College in Atlanta, but Metro soon dropped out after his career took off. One fateful trip to meet with Bricksquad Monopoly rappers eventually put him in contact with Atlanta artist Future, who he would collaborate with frequently. He produced on Future’s second album, including the single “Karate Chop” and the title track “Honest.”
Metro Boomin would soon release his debut project 19 & Boomin, which featured collaborations from Future and Young Thug. A scrapped project with Young Thug entitled Metro Thuggin never saw the light of day, and Metro continued to work with Future on his next project Monster. This tape spawned the single “Fuck Up Some Commas,” and the next year Metro would executive produce Future and Drake’s collar album What a Time to Be Alive. Throughout 2016 and 2017, Metro produced countless hits before “retiring” from producing. After a brief “retirement,” Metro would take much of 2018 off and return to produce tracks on both Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne’s albums.
Metro Boomin released collaboration projects with Offset & 21 Savage as well as Big Sean, with each peaking at #4 and #6 on the Billboard 200 chart, respectively. Another EP with 21 Savage, Savage Mode, peaked at #23. A joint project with NAV also peaked at #13. His singles with 21 Savage “X” and “No Heart” were both certified double Platinum in 2016. “Call Me” with NAV was certified Platinum the next year, and his song “Ric Flair Drip” with Offset and 21 Savage was certified triple Platinum. “Space Cadet” with Gunna was certified Platinum and peaked at #51 on the Billboard Hot 100. His production credits include “Tuesday” by ILoveMakonnen and Drake going Platinum, “Jumpman” with Future and Drake going quadruple Platinum, “Bad and Boujee” with the Migos going quadruple Platinum and #1, “Congratulations” with Post Malone and Quavo going Diamond and peaking at #8, and “Mask Off” with Future going quadruple Platinum and peaking at #5.
Metro Boomin would drop his debut album Not All Heroes Wear Capes in late 2018 peaking at #1 on the Billboard 200 and being certified Gold. In 2019 would produce two tracks for James Blake and The Weeknd’s comeback single “ Heartless.” He is currently working on Savage Mode 2 with rapper 21 Savage.
