Merle Haggard Bio

Merle Haggard was born in 1937 in California, shortly after his family had moved to Bakersfield from Oklahoma. Haggard’s father passed away when he was only eight years old, and so young Merle was forced to begin working to help support the family. A gift of a guitar when he was twelve years old sparked Merle Haggard’s life-long love of music, but before he found his calling he experienced rather rough years, dropping out of school and spending some time in jail.

After Haggard’s release from jail in 1960, he vowed to turn his life around, and so he earned his GED and began working legitimate jobs. He also began performing around town in local bars and his talents caught the interest of Tally Records. Two years after recording his first single, “Skid Row,” Haggard recorded a cover of “Sing a Sad Song” in 1964 and the song went on to become a hit. His first top ten arrive din the following year with “(My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers,” and then in 1966, he scored his first number one hit with “I’m a Lonesome Fugitive,” launching a career which would take him into the new millennium.

For the next two decades, Merle Haggard would release nearly forty number one country hits, including: “Branded Man,” “Sing Me Back Home,” “The Legend of Bonnie and Clyde,” “Mama Tried,” “Hungry Eyes,” “Workin’ Man Blues,” “The Fightin’ Side of Me,” “Carolyn,” “Grandma Harp,” “I Wonder If They Ever Think of Me,” “Everybody’s Had the Blues,” “Things Aren’t Funny Anymore,” “Kentucky Gambler,” “It’s All in the Movies,” “Cherokee Maiden,” “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here And Drink,” “Yesterday’s Wine,” “You Take Me For Granted,” “Someday When Things Are Good,” “Let’s Chase Each Other Around the Room,” “A Place to Fall Apart,” “Natural High,” and Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Star.”

For his achievements during this period, Merle Haggard was recognized with Academy of Country Music Awards for Top Male Vocalist for multiple years, Album and Single of the Year, and Entertainer of the Year; Country Music Association awards for Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, and Single of the Year; and Grammy Awards for Best Country Vocal Performance and a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. After a period of relative quiet in the 1990’s, Merle Haggard returned at the dawn of the new millennium with the critically acclaimed If I Could Only Fly, followed by Roots, vol. 1 (2001.) The album Chicago Wind followed in 2005, and then the Bluegrass Sessions in 2007.

Most recently, Merle Haggard released I Am What I Am in 2010 and performed on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, singing the title track, in the following year. Haggard continues with future plans to perform and record in the coming years.
