Fusing country, bluegrass and the harmonies of California surfer rock, the Eagles made their mark with tender ballads and soft rock, country-flavored ditties about relationships, cars, and the life on the road. The Eagles took the singer-songwriter ethos of the late '60s and early '70s and set it in group setting with increased emphasis on arrangements and musicianship. The Eagles formed in 1971 when Linda Ronstadt's then-manager, John Boylan, stole Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner from other bands. Frey phoned a drummer named Don Henley, whom he had met at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. The band backed up Ronstadt on a two-month tour, then decided to form their own band, The Eagles. The Eagles eponymous debut was innocent, nubile country rock that offered as much bluegrass, as it did rock. The smash hit follow-up, Desperado, introduced the group's penchant for conceptual songwriting and turned the world onto easy, breezy California rock. The Eagles' third album, On the Border, the group selected producer Glyn Johns, who previously worked with Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and The Who. The Eagles brought in Johns because they wanted to rock, but Johns let the band down by extracting the lush overtones of the band's music. After completing two thirds of the album with Johns, the band turned to Bill Szymczyk to complete the album. Szymczyk brought in slide guitarist Don Felder on a song called "Good Day in Hell", and the band was so blown away, Felder became the fifth Eagle two days later. The album included the #1 Billboard single in the song "Best of My Love." One of These Nights was the Eagles fourth album and found the band continuing down the rock path away from bluegrass and country. Because of this, Bernie Leadon left the group, disillusioned about the direction the band's music was taking. Leadon was quickly replaced with the James Gang's guitaist-frontman Joe Walsh. He was also an accomplished solo artist in his own right. In 1976, the Eagles released Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) was released. It now stands as the biggest-selling album in US history, selling over 28 million copies. The Eagles' next album, Hotel California, came out in late 1976 and became their biggest selling studio album to date. It contained the #1 singles "New Kid in Town", "Life In The Fast Lane" and the band's masterpiece "Hotel California." Then Randy Meisner decidedthat after seven years as an Eagle, he needed to leave the. The Eagles replaced Meisner with the same man who had succeeded him in Poco, Timothy B. Schmit. In 1978, the Eagles recorded their final studio album, The Long Run. It included the Eagles' last #1 single "Heartache Tonight." During the early 1990s, an Eagles tribute album titled Common Thread was released. Travis Tritt insisted on having the Long Run-era Eagles in his video for "Take It Easy." After the video was shot, the band shocked the world by reuniting in 1994. The ensuing tour spawned the infamous live album Hell Freezes. In 1998, the Eagles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. During the induction ceremony, all seven former members played together on stage. The Eagles were then inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001. As of 2005 the Eagles consist of Frey, Henley, Walsh, and Schmit. In 2007, the Eagles released Long Road Out of Eden, their first album of new material since 1979. The album debuted at No. 1 in the United States. In 2008, the Eagles won the Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "How Long." It was the band's fifth Grammy Award. In March of 2008, the Eagles launched their world tour in support of Long Road Out of Eden in London, England. Fan Resource - Eagles Online Central!
