Bela Fleck & The Flecktones Biography

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones was established in the late 1980’s, by musician Bela Fleck. Fleck sought to blend the genres of bluegrass, jazz, and folk into a new sound that would provide an outlet for improvisation and innovation. The result was a multi-award winning performance group that has survived well into the new millennium, still performing worldwide every year.

With musical siblings Roy and Victor Wooten on rhythm, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones have released multiple chart-topping albums, including: Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (1990), Flight of the Cosmic Hippo (1991), UFO Tofu (1991), Three Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1993), Live Art (1996), Left of Cool (1998), Greatest Hits of the 20^th Century (1999), Outbound (2000), Live at the Quick (2002), Little Worlds (2003), Ten from Little Worlds (2003), The Hidden Land (2006), and Jingle All the Way (2008.) Bela Fleck and the Flecktones have won five Grammys, for: Best Pop Instrumental Performance, Best Contemporary Jazz Album, Best Pop Instrumental Album, and Best Instrumental Composition.

Most recently, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones Rocket Science in 2011, and Fleck released the film Throw Down Your Heart in 2009, which chronicles his journey to Africa to explore the roots of the music with which he is so enamored. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones continue to tour actively and perform regularly.
