Count Basie arose to become a jazz titan from humble beginnings. William Basie, hit the juke joints in and around Kansas City in the early '30s in an attempt to find work as a pianist. There, Basie worked the national vaudeville circuit before joining the popular Benny Moten Orchestra. In 1935, just a year after Moten's death, Basie took over the band and the Count Basie Orchestra was born. The Count Basie Orchestra played the 1939 World's Fair in San Francisco, which served to further their growing popularity. Throughout the '40s, film appearances and recordings with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, and Tony Bennett & Frank Sinatra became popular around the globe. The Count Basie Orchestra stayed busy in the '50s and '60s, touring the world as one of jazz's most popular ambassadors. These days, the Count Basie Orchestra lives on, despite it's leader and namesake's passing. The Orchestra now features nineteen performers; some members are new, yet Count Basie himself handpicked the majority of musicians.
