Jennifer Holliday Biography
Jennifer Holliday was born in 1960 in Riverside, Texas. She was only nineteen when she hit Broadway, starring in the musical Your Arms Too Short to Box with God, and by 1981 she’d earned her first award nomination for a Drama Desk Award. But it was her performance as Effie Melody White in Dreamgirls which would rocket her to superstardom. The performance led to Jennifer Holliday’s sweep of the 1982 award season, bringing her a Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, a Grammy for the play’s song “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” and both Drama Desk and Theater World performances.
After “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” hit the charts in 1982 as a single, Jennifer Holliday continued a solo career that brought her success for the rest of the decade. She released the albums Feel My Soul (1983), Say You Love Me (1985), Get Close to My Love (1987), I’m On Your Side (1991), On & On (1995), and Goodness and Mercy (2011), spawning the singles "I Am Love", "Hard Time For Lovers,” "No Frills Love," " Heart on the Line," "I'm on Your Side," and "A Woman's Got the Power."
Holliday is best recognized for her unique voice, a powerful contralto with an incredible range deployed with skill and talent. In addition to her achievements in music, Jennifer Holliday has also appeared in acting roles, on Touched By An Angel, Hang Time, and Ally McBeal. Holliday continues to perform, record, and act.
