Few ever thought that little Penny from Good Times would grow up to become one of the biggest pop stars of all time. Janet Jackson is a performer of rare breed.

Janet Jackson got first taste of the performing life as part of family's Las Vegas act in 1974. In 1976, she appeared on her brothers' TV variety show The Jacksons. Janet Jackson starred as Penny on the TV comedy series Good Times from 1977-79. Janet would later go on to portray big brother Willis' girlfriend on the sitcom Diff'rent Strokes and star on the television series version of Fame (1984-5), based at a New York City performing arts high school.

Janet Jackson released her eponymous debut in 1982. The self-titled album sold about 250,000 copies, as did her follow-up, Dream Street, which was released in 1984.

Janet Jackson became a pop queen in 1986 with the release of Control. The album sold an incredible eight million copies and made Janet Jackson a household name. It featured two No. 1 singles, "What Have You Done For Me Lately" and the title track.

Her fourth album, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814, spawned a number of hit singles, including "Black Cat," "Miss You Much," and "Escapade." Incredibly, it also went platinum 8 times. Janet Jackson became the first artist to have seven Top 5 hits from a single album.

In 1993, Janet was released and sold more than six million copies. "Any Time, Any Place," became Jackson's 14th gold single, tying her with Aretha Franklin as the female solo singers with the most gold singles. "That's the Way Love Goes" earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rhythm & Blues Song.

The Velvet Rope was released in 1997.

In 2004, Janet Jackson shocked the world and floored censors when she flashed her right booby during the Super. Later that year, Janet debuted at #2 on the charts with her eighth studio album, Damita Jo. Janet Jackson released 20 Y.O. in 2006. In early 2008, Janet Jackson released Discipline, her tenth studio album to date.
